June 2008

Greetings!

I hope this email finds you well. This is an update on Kawayan Folk Arts Summer 2008 season. Please feel free to share it with your friends and family and anyone else who may be interested. We have some exciting news to share.

I am happy to announce that Kawayan Folk Arts is a full fledged non-profit public benefit corporation in the state of California. I have to call out special attention to all of our staff, especially Danielle Schnabel and Brian Delapena, who have worked hard with me pouring through the necessary steps.

Also, I would like to formally introduce you to Kawayan's non-profit Board of Directors: Sarah Dimayuga, Angela Breaux, Larissa Cabael, Michelle Cunanan, Nenita Guillermo, Carl Viegelmann, Brian Delapena, and Buenaflor Nicolas. They bring a large background of ethnic performing arts, organizational expertise, and leadership experience that will bring Kawayan to great success.

We are also celebrating the relaunch of Kawayan's website, kawayanfolkarts.org. It was put together with lot of work by Carlos Tuzon and with our resident marketing team including Jason Berena and Mark Trinidad. We will very soon update it with a gallery of performances. Check it out!

It is still not too late to take Kawayan Folk Arts Workshops. These workshops are on each Saturday mornings through July 19 in San Jose without long term commitment. No experience necessary! Contact Audrey at audrey[at]kawayanfolkarts.org for more information.

Please save the date! Saturday, August 23. Kawayan will have 2 shows at 2PM and 7PM. "Tuklas: Discover," in Mountain View, will feature ethnic music and dances from the Philippines presented in a narrative style on the small stage. Click the picture to view the poster and details.

We have a lot of performance requests in July and August. Please contact MaryAnne or Jason at info[at]kawayanfolkarts.org for your ethnic dance and music performance needs as well as educational workshops.
Special remarks go to:

George Gange,
director of the Fil-Am Veterans Rondalla, on his retirement.
Our musicians will be performing at his celebration on 6/29.
Rudi C. Soriano,
Founder and Artistic director of Likha Pilipino Folk Ensemble for his celebration of 16+ years of achievements on 6/27.
Danielle Schnabel,
our resident hero, for her great friendship and service as we wish her bon voyage to new adventures. We will miss her.

Our group has been together for a long time, but August marks the 2nd anniversary of Kawayan Folk Arts as a company. I am extremely proud of our accomplishments and excited about where the next steps will bring us. Special thanks goes to our artists, staff, family and supports who have given so much to fulfill our mission.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Have a wonderful summer.

Agyamanak,

RJ Payomo
